We're Michael & Chelsea Rowlands - husband & wife Virginia wedding photographers for over 6 years for the low-key, authentic and joyful couple that is head over heels in love. We believe in true love and building strong marriages that last a lifetime. We're also passionate about building relationships with our couples that extend past the wedding day.
Below you'll find a ton of information that should answer many of your questions regarding who we are and what we offer. Our goal is not just to be your wedding photographers, but also to be your friends! When we say yes to a couple, it's because we think we would be a great fit. We don't accept every inquiry we receive and we only take 10-12 weddings a year, so it's important to us that we get to know our couples and "meet" over FaceTime before proceeding with the booking process...

Hooray! We think you'd make the perfect Rowlands Photography couple! Now, let's get your date on our calendar so that we can make things official. We'll send you an online contract for you to read and sign and information on how to pay your deposit. Once both of those things are checked off, you are OFFICIALLY a Rowlands Photography couple! We can't wait to capture this season you're in with an engagement session...
STEP two:
Save the date

The process
Yay, yay, yay! One of our favorite parts of this whole process is capturing your giddiness on camera during your engagement session. This time with us is crucial because this is when you get to meet us in person, get to know us, trust us and have all those save-the-date photos captured. After your session, you'll be featured on our blog, where we'll share highlights from your session. A few days after that, we'll deliver your photos via online gallery for you to download, share and print how you wish.

Though we'll be in contact throughout your engagement to touch base and see how you're doing, about 8 weeks before your wedding day we will reach out to start planning your timeline. And don't worry, we've got this! We've seen every type of timeline you can think of, so with a few simple pieces of information, we can construct the perfect timeline for you that will wow your family, bridal party and even your coordinator!

The process
Your wedding day is finally here! We can't wait to celebrate with you! Depending on the package you chose, we will usually arrive when you're getting ready and typically leave when you leave for the night. We're there to capture all of the big moments, as well as the little moments in between. We live for capturing the REAL moments, like your smile right before your kiss, and we're going to work hard to make sure your day is perfect. Most of all, we're here for you and consider it an honor to capture your day.

You may be traveling to your honeymoon the day after your wedding or cuddled up in a hotel eating brunch. No matter where you are, make sure you have WiFi because we will have 15-20 sneak peeks to share with you the DAY AFTER your wedding! We share these with you on Facebook the day after because we know that you can't wait to see your photos. This sneak peek is for you so that you can update your profile picture and so that you can share with your friends and family who weren't able to attend your big day.

Next-day preview

The process
After we deliver your next-day preview, we begin to go through all our favorite images from your day so that we can put together a special post that features your wedding on our blog. We share about you and your love story, as well as moments that stood out to us from your day all in one post that can be easily shared with your friends and family online so that they can relive your day with you.
STEP Seven:

The process
You can expect to receive your full gallery with print release within 4 weeks of your wedding day. When you receive it, you will see that each portion of your day is in different folders (for example: getting ready, ceremony, bridal party). This is so you can easily look through and find any image that you might be looking forward to seeing. Your gallery will be available online for 6 months for you to download from. After that time, your gallery will be stored on our hard drive for 3 years.

It's been so long since we've seen you and, to be honest, we miss you guys! We'd absolutely love to capture an anniversary session for you all when that time comes. If you decide to reach out to us to book an anniversary session, we'll offer you a very special discount just for being a Rowlands Photography couple!

We believe that your wedding day should be captured (and edited) just as you remember it. This is why we describe our editing style as "real life, but a little better." Most of our editing involves correcting white balance, warming up the photos to create more glow and adding some slight contrast to make you pop off the screen. Our style of editing is designed to enhance, not distract. We want you to look through your wedding album in 50+ years and be happy that you chose timeless over trendy.

Q: How would you describe your photography style?
A: Authentic, joyful & timeless, so that when you look at your photos, you remember the colors as they truly were and the emotions as you felt them on your wedding day. We take a combination of posed and candid photos, leaving you with just the right amount of "frame at grandma's house" photos and "we were laughing so hard" photos.
Q: How many weddings do you take a year?
A: We currently only accept 10-12 a year due to the needs of our family and so that we can provide our clients with a consistent, 5-star experience.
Q: How many pictures do we receive?
A: We average 100+ pictures an hour, so if your wedding coverage is 8 hours, you can expect to receive 800+ final photos.
Q: What is your turnaround time for editing photos?
A: Our contract states that we will deliver a full wedding gallery within 4-6 weeks, but we often deliver full wedding galleries before then. The average turn around time for engagement sessions is 2 weeks.
Q: What is your travel rate?
A: We charge $0.56/mile round trip from Suffolk, VA, plus lodging for 1-2 days when over venue is 2.5 hours from Suffolk, VA (dependent on package choice and start/end time of wedding). For weddings further than 3 hours away, contact us for a specific quote.
Q: Do you travel to (insert beautiful location here)?
A: We LOVE to travel, so chances are, yes! However, we take a limited number of travel weddings each year due to the needs of our family, so reach out soon if you're planning a destination wedding.
Q: How many of the photos are edited and retouched?
A: ALL of them! Any final images that we deliver to you will be edited per our style and retouched lightly for the bride & groom.
Q: When should I schedule my engagement/bridal session?
A: You can schedule your engagement session anytime after your deposit is received up until a month before the wedding. For your bridal session, we recommend anywhere between 1-3 months before your wedding date so that your dress will be altered and perfected for you.
Q: What time should I hold my wedding ceremony?
A: We would always recommend holding your ceremony, whether indoor or outdoor, approximately 2 hours before sunset or more. This will allow us to do all of your wedding party photos, family formal photos and bride and groom portraits outdoors during cocktail hour before the sunsets.
Q: Do you have a suggested timeline for my wedding day?
A: Yes! After photographing 50+ weddings, we know exactly how much time we need during each portion of the day to ensure you have all the needed photos in the coverage you chose. About 2 months before the wedding day, we will begin to plan out timeline based on your needs and coverage.
Q: Can I take out the engagement session for a price reduction?
A: The engagement session is crucial for us getting to know you as a couple. It also gives you the opportunity to learn most of the poses we will use on your wedding day and to get used to being in front of our cameras. Because we feel like that the benefits of the engagement session are too great, engagement sessions and all other package items are non-transferable and cannot be withdrawn.
Q: What types of payments do you take and what is your deposit?
A: We accept check and debit cards through the Cash/Square app. Our deposit is $1,000 at booking and the remaining balance 14 days before your wedding.
Q: What if I have to reschedule/cancel my wedding date?
A: You can reschedule your wedding date any time within 2 years of your original date and we will honor your contract, pricing and retainer. If you decide to cancel, your retainer cannot be refunded, but all other monies paid will be refunded as long as you cancel at least 30 days before your wedding date.
Q: I'm ready to book! What do I do now!
A: Awesome! Send us an email saying you're ready to reserve your date and we'll send our online contract over for you to sign, as well as a request for you to pay your deposit. Once the deposit is received and contract is signed, you're OFFICIALLY a Rowlands Photography couple! Welcome to the family! :)
